Mike joined Ryley Carlock & Applewhite in 1986 and heads up the firm’s banking and finance practice, which continues to be recognized in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Law Firms” rankings as a “Tier 1” (top tier) practice in the Phoenix market and was ranked by “Ranking Arizona” as the top banking and finance law firm in the state for three consecutive years.

Mike represents lenders, borrowers, buyers and sellers in commercial real estate and asset-based (including agricultural) loan transactions (including loan originations, workouts and enforcement) and real estate purchases and sales. His experience includes many retail, office, industrial, multi-family, mixed-use, hospitality and assisted living projects. This includes leasehold loans (including Arizona State Land Department trust land leases), mezzanine loans and loan syndications and participations (both as counsel to the lead lender and as counsel to the co-lenders or participants). Mike often serves as counsel to BBVA Compass Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, MidFirst Bank, Mutual of Omaha Bank, BNC National Bank, Alerus Financial and other financial institutions in Arizona loan transactions, workouts and enforcement activities, and often serves as Arizona counsel to both lenders and borrowers in multistate loan transactions.

Mike graduated from the University of Notre Dame Law School, where he served as Note Editor of the Notre Dame Law Review. He practiced public accounting before entering law school and continues to hold a Certified Public Accountant certificate as an inactive registrant.

He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, and has been recognized by the Clubs for his contribution of many hours of legal work, both during and following his service on the Board, in acquiring the Clubs’ Vestar Branch site and Thrift Store building. His family includes two sons and one daughter from Korea.

Mike’s attorney profile in the 2019 Chambers USA directory states: “Clients describe Michael Ripp as ‘a consistently outstanding attorney,’ adding that ‘he is detail-oriented, intelligent, practical and willing to go to extraordinary lengths to meet deadlines and provide a quality product’.”

We have been considered a “lender’s firm” since our formation in 1948 and are honored to be selected by U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Law Firms” rankings as a “Tier 1” (top tier) banking and finance practice in the Phoenix legal market. On multiple occasions, our Banking Group has been recognized by Ranking Arizona as the #1 Banking Law Firm in the state.

Our attorneys structure, negotiate and document a wide variety of loan transactions, including revolving credits, construction loans, acquisition and development loans, loan participations and syndicated credits, mezzanine loans and letters of credit. Our real estate lending experience includes master planned communities, golf courses, redevelopment projects, high-rise condominiums, hotels, farmland, dairies, Arizona State Land Department leases, shopping centers, office buildings, industrial parks, apartment projects, leasehold loans and assisted living facilities. We also frequently serve as local counsel to borrowers and lenders in multistate transactions or loan enforcement and as counsel to trustees and bondholders in bond financings.

We assist lending clients in working out problem loans and enforcing their rights against borrowers who are unable or unwilling to honor their obligations, and regularly represent financial institutions in litigation, arbitration, mediation and bankruptcy proceedings, including the defense of “lender liability” claims.

Our attorneys also represent banking clients in formation and licensing issues before the Arizona Department of Financial Institutions and in connection with other regulatory compliance issues.

The banking and finance practice is complemented by a number of other practice areas, including real estate, corporate and securities, environmental and natural resources, intellectual property, creditors’ rights and bankruptcy and commercial litigation, which round out the broad range of expertise required to effectively serve our banking and finance clients.

To demonstrate our commitment to our banking and finance clients, we also develop and present in-house legal seminars and prepare and disseminate newsletters and bulletins covering a variety of legal subjects that impact financial institutions.
