Dr Mathias Hanten is a Partner in the Frankfurt office of Deloitte Legal, where he leads the German Banking & Finance practice and holds the same position at Deloitte Legal Global. Together with his German team of 25 highly specialised lawyers, he advises credit institutions and financial services providers on all aspects of financial regulation.
His expertise covers ownership control, licensing and European passporting, as well as SRM, SSM, CRD VI, CRR III, AIFMD, AML, MiFID II and related frameworks. Mathias has a particular focus on cross-border matters (including exemptions and market entry), banking M&A (including ownership control proceedings), and deposit insurance. He is frequently recommended as a banking law expert by leading industry publications such as JUVE and The Legal 500 Germany.
Clients value his practical insight, measured advice, and long-standing trusted counsel. Alongside his professional practice, he is committed to academia. He lectures in banking regulatory law on the Master of Banking and Capital Markets Law programme at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management – a role that requires constant engagement with the fundamentals of the field while remaining attuned to emerging developments.
Mathias’ academic contributions extend beyond teaching. He sits on the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Law and Finance at Goethe University and serves on the Academic Advisory Board of BSP Business & Law School, Berlin.
